One feared dead in Bayelsa cult clash


The relative peace of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital was again tested yesterday night when suspected rival cult groups were locked in violent gun fight in which one person lost his life.

Several persons were also injured in the nearly thirty minutes of madness in which sporadic shooting rented the air of the Amarata suburb of the state capital between 7.30pm and 8:00pm.

Economic activities were paralyzed as residents were forced to retire to their rooms when a deafening explosion believed to be dynamite went off around the OMPADEC area of Amarata.

Although the immediate cause of the violent confrontation between the rival groups identified as Icelanders and Greenlanders in which sophisticated guns and dynamites were freely used could not be ascertained, it was however gathered that it might not be unconnected with the supremacy battle by both camps for the soul of Yenagoa.

The deceased whose name could not be ascertained is said to have hailed from Amassoma in the Southern Ijaw local government area of the state.
Vanguard gathered that trouble again started around the OMPADEC area of Amarata where a barber was sometime ago shot dead by suspected cultists when the rival groups engage themselves in heavy shootout in the densely populated slum throwing the entire neighbourhood into confusion.
The cult war later spread to Imgbi road where a youth was shot dead by the rampaging cultists with several others sustaining various degrees of injuries.
